Program Overview

Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science

Earn your Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science degree in just two years on a fast-track to your Coast Guard license and employment opportunities in the maritime industry! Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) students are introduced to the exciting world of nautical science through this co-operative educational program that prepares students for a career at sea.

Our teaching model includes hands-on learning, simulator training, classroom theory and co-operative shipboard experiences, meeting the needs of all styles of learners. Explore opportunities to travel in the “Summer at Sea” program, where you will gain real world experience, build professional relationships in the industry and earn sea-service towards your professional maritime license.

Program Overview

United States Coast Guard Lateral
Enlistment Program

In 2023, the United States Coast Guard and Northeast Maritime Institute – College of Maritime Science formed a historic partnership. This agreement allows NMI graduates of the Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science Degree Program to enter the Coast Guard’s Lateral Enlistment Program as junior petty officers after completing USCG boot camp. Graduates can enlist as third-class or second-class Boatswains Mates, serving full-time in the Coast Guard or in the Coast Guard Reserve while working in the U.S. Merchant Marine.

High school graduates enrolling in the program may also choose to join the Coast Guard Reserve and attend boot camp during the summer before their fall semester, receiving bonuses and pay to help offset college tuition.

Program Overview

Summer At Sea Program

Two ninety-day shipboard externships provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their learned knowledge and skills, gained sea time and network with other professional mariners. Students can experience various facets of the maritime industry and begin career networking. The sea time gained during these amazing opportunities will be applied toward professional credentials.
