U.S. Student Requirements
We are now accepting applicants for our Fall 2024 cohort. Here’s what you need to apply to our Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science degree program:
Application Package
- College Application Form
- Official High School Transcript – Recommended minimum of a 2.0 GPA; exceptions may apply.
- Official transcript of course grades received from all colleges or universities attended.
- Two Letters of Recommendation – See Attachment for Letter of Recommendation Guidelines (to be given to recommender)
- 500-750 Word Essay – Double-Spaced with Name and Title.

- Admissions Interview – After receipt and review of your complete application you will be contacted to schedule an Admissions interview, which may be completed in person or via online video meeting.

NMI reserves the right to:
- close applications earlier than posted due to the number and quality of applications
- accept applications after the deadline
- refuse enrollment deposits and suspend acceptances after enrollment deposit deadline due to enrollment limitations

Offer of Admission
Offers of Admission are granted based upon an applicant’s current academic performance and personal behavior, and it is assumed that the applicant will maintain at minimum those same levels after being accepted. Northeast Maritime Institute reserves the right to rescind an offer of admission if it is learned that an applicant’s academic performance or personal behavior are viewed to be substandard.
Fraudulent Reporting
Applicants must provide accurate and complete information on all application documents. Intentional omission or falsification of information during the application process will result in the immediate rejection of the application. Application misrepresentation includes, but is not limited to: (1) false, omitted, or misleading information on the application, medical or immunization forms, financial aid disclosures or during the personal interview, (2) fake, forged, or altered transcripts, standardized test scores, or letters of recommendation.
Waitlist / Deferral Policy
Northeast Maritime Institute ‘s Office of Admissions acts on applications on a rolling basis until the maximum cohort size of 16 is met for the Applied Nautical Science program. NMI maintains a Wait List for those applicants who meet admission criteria, yet apply or deposit after program or enrollment capacity has been met. These candidates are placed on the Wait List from which vacancies in the incoming cohort may be filled from. Additionally, qualified applicants may be offered deferred enrollment into the next enrolling semester if space allows.

International Transcript Evaluation
Please note: all non-U.S. transcripts, diplomas, certificates and licenses must be evaluated by an approved evaluation service. The evaluation service will verify international transcripts for:
- authenticity
- grade and course equivalency
- transfer credits awarded
Northeast Maritime Institute recognizes the members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (http://naces.org/members.html) for international transcript evaluation services.
An application for evaluation is available through their respective online service. This service does require a fee. The fee varies depending on which service you choose and what type of evaluation you request. Northeast Maritime Institute requests prospective international students to do an undergraduate course-by-course breakdown of credits, a calculation of credit hours, and a verification of authenticity.
English Proficiency
Requirements of all international applicants whose native language is not English:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – Minimum score required for admissions consideration: 550 on the paper-based test (PBT), a 70 on the internet-based test (iBT) or a 7.0 average on the TOEFL Essentials online test.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Only the academic format is acceptable and a minimum score of 6.0 is required.
- The TOEFL/IELTS requirement may be waived if the applicant is currently enrolled in full-time studies in the United States and will have completed two academic years of coursework in the United States immediately prior to enrolling at Northeast Maritime.
- The TOEFL/IELTS requirement is waived for non-native English-speaking applicants who have received an undergraduate or graduate degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction.
- Proof of successful completion of an intensive English as a Second Language program may be acceptable in lieu of the TOEFL/ISLTS.
Financial Support
International applicants must certify that sufficient funding is available to cover fees, books, supplies, tuition and living expenses for the entire duration of their enrollment. A letter of sponsorship or an officially certified or notarized Northeast Maritime Institute. Submit documentation of financial support to the Office of Admissions. Unfortunately, international students are ineligible for any form of federal financial assistance while enrolled. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for information regarding private sources of funds for international students.
