Northeast Maritime Institute is located in the center of historic Fairhaven, Massachusetts on beautiful Buzzards Bay. Our anchor facility is located at 32 Washington Street in an 1800’s building built by Warren Delano’s grandfather, which once served as the Unitarian Church in Fairhaven. The remainder of the campus encompasses buildings throughout the center of the Town which house the College of Maritime Science’s Academic Center, Brigantine Hall, The Applied Nautical Science education facility, Integrity Hall and our Maritime Safety Education facility, Lemley Hall. The Marina at Slocum Cove, the Institute’s waterfront facility, is located less than one mile away offering additional laboratory space and is the home facility for the Institute’s fleet of vessels and its competitive sailing team.
Buildings & Facilities
Founders Hall (Administrative Building)
32 Washington St
Founders Hall, NMI’s Administration Building, is home to NMI’s Admissions Office, the Registrar’s Office, the Joshua Slocum Library and also houses classrooms, our simulation center with two-full bridge simulators and six part-task simulators and liquid cargo handling simulators.
Founders Hall also houses the Office of the President, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Academic Officer, the Dean of Students, Multi-Media Department, and the Financial Aid Office/Bursars Office. The building has a common area, tutoring spaces, a fitness center and a basketball/volleyball court.
Integrity Hall

Integrity Hall, contains multiple classrooms, a naval architecture drafting classroom, a physics and engineering laboratory, a Radar Simulation lab, an ocean science wet lab and a large lecture hall that accommodates meetings and presentations.
Morning meetings and briefings are typically held in this building.
Brigantine Hall

Brigantine Hall, the name attributed to NMI’s Brigantine S/V Fritha, serves as a student services and recreational center. Brigantine Hall provides quiet spaces for tutoring, student support services, and career counseling. Brigantine Hall hosts the offices of Nautical Science faculty and Student Support Services and facilitates a comfortable environment for faculty and students to connect. The lower level of Brigantine Hall will host a cooking classroom, a dining area, a game room, movie room and lounge and a dart room for student recreational use.
Lemley Hall
56 Main St
Lemley Hall, named and dedicated to Captain Norman W. Lemley, the pioneer in United States maritime safety, security and environmental protection policy. Lemley Hall hosts NMI’s Life Safety lab and classrooms and extensive a marlinspike seamanship lab.
Marlinspike Seamanship Lab
NMI’s Marlinespike Seamanship Lab at Lemley Hall ensures that the art of seamanship is learned, realized and demonstrated to include the tying of various knots, splicing, working with cable or wire rope with cable or wire rope, even making decorative ornaments from rope or line. Our Marlinspike Seamanship Lab provides an environment to both learn and demonstrate knowledge and proficiency skills. Currently, NMI has designed and is building desk top marlinespike labs for individual practice anywhere, anytime.
Life Safety Lab
The life safety lab at Lemley Hall provides access to lifesaving equipment including immersion suits, liferafts, a lifeboat model, firefighting equipment and emergency signaling equipment
Marina At Slocum Cove

The Marina at Slocum Cove is named after the legendary tall ship captain, Joshua Slocum, who was the first individual to circumnavigate the world alone on a solo voyage that left within one hundred meters from the marina in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The marina has 72 slips and is home to NMI’s training vessels, collegiate sailing team, boatbuilding lab and is the site of future classroom space. Limited student housing is located at the Marina at Slocum Cove.
Fleet
S/V Fritha
A 74’ traditionally rigged wooden tall ship provides the opportunity for hands on training in navigation, marlin-spike seamanship and the art of square rig sailing.
M/V Navigator
Navigator is a 65 foot aluminum crewboat that provides a hands on learning platform for shiphandling, navigation, seamanship and marine engineering.
Kehoe Launch
The Kehoe is a 30’ launch boat that provides launch services for the Marina at Slocum Cove and provides introductory boat handling and seamanship practical training for underclassmen.
Captain Jules Kehoe was a beloved instructor at Northeast Maritime Institute and encouraged students and faculty alike to keep improving and growing as mariners and as people. To “honor the mariner” NMI has dedicated a Launch in her name.
Lifeboat Trainer
A fully installed 30-foot fiberglass lifeboat complete with gravity davits, is used in our USCG Approved Lifeboatman Proficiency in Survival Craft courses. Students complete practical demonstrations of launching, rowing and recovering the lifeboat.
Simulators
Northeast Maritime Institute’s Simulation Center houses two Full-Bridge Simulators, a Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator, and six RADAR/ARPA/ECDIS Part-Task Simulators. The center provides hands-on practical experiences to students which are unlike that of any training center in the United States, combining our simulation experience and then transferring their knowledge to real world applications using our training vessels.
Shiphandling
The two Full Bridge Simulators, (tug and large ship) provide navigation and full-mission simulation with a 240° and 320° degree horizontal field of view, and additionally the full mission tug simulator provides 110° of vertical views to oversee deck operations as well as ensuring that navigational situation awareness is realized. The simulators enable our students to be fully immersed in a virtual environment increasing training realism and redundancy of problems to ensure that they are industry ready upon graduation. Our simulators can be fully integrated with each other.
Tugboat Operations
The Tug and Barge Full-mission Simulator provides students with the best of tools for both ship assist training tasks and professional training in tug and barge operations. Our scenarios include simulation training in mooring operations (ship-to-ship and ship-to-pier), anchoring operations, and tug operations in automatic and manual mode. Our tug simulator provides training for Apprentice Mate, Mate and Master training for Towing Operators as well.
Liquid Cargo Handling
The Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator is designed to train and certify students for positions on liquid cargo tankers, gas carriers, barges and terminals and in addition to training staff responsible for safe cargo handling and the operation of auxiliary equipment.
Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems and Electronic Navigation
The RADAR/ARPA/ECDIS Part-Task Simulators. Are used to teach students modern techniques using electronic charts that can be used as an alternative to paper nautical charts. The lab consists of six student stations, with each station being itself a stand-alone full mission simulator.
