Experiential Learning
Northeast Maritime Institute College of Maritime Science understands the importance of receiving a multi-faceted, experiential-learning based education. Hands-on learning is a key component of the Applied Nautical Science program, transferring the concepts covered in the classroom to practical applications in labs, in our full-bridge simulators, on board our training vessels, and during summer externship experiences. We believe this approach provides a stronger educational experience for our students and prepares them for shipboard employment.
Use of Facilities
Located in a working commercial harbor, NMI is surrounded by commerce and industry, immersing students with insights and opportunities. Northeast Maritime Institute College of Maritime Science utilizes its resources to provide students with the best hands-on education possible. NMI boasts a protected waterfront property, the Marina at Slocum Cove, numerous simulators (full bridge, tug bridge, ECDIS, ARPA), and applied science laboratories. With ease, College of Maritime Science students and faculty can easily shift from a theoretical to applied setting.
Campus & Fleet
Northeast Maritime Institute is located in the center of historic Fairhaven, Massachusetts on beautiful Buzzards Bay. Our anchor facility is located at 32 Washington Street in an 1800’s building which once served as the Unitarian Church in Fairhaven and built by Warren Delano’s grandfather. The remainder of the campus encompasses buildings throughout the center of the Town which house the College of Maritime Science’s main Administrative building, student resources building, the Applied Nautical Science education facility, Integrity Hall and our Maritime Safety Education facility, Lemley Hall. The Marina at Slocum Cove, the Institute’s waterfront facility, is located less than one mile away offering additional laboratory space and is the home facility for the Institute’s fleet of vessels and its club sailing team.

Semester at Sea Expectations
- Complete two 90-day externships onboard a commercial vessel. Students are employed on vessels working (90) twelve-hour days. This employment format is preferred in order to maximize relevant sea-time to accumulate and maximize professional license qualifications for the 100/200 GRT Master/Mate/Able Seaman, Limited credentials.
- Complete the required coursework for ENG111 Sea Journal I and ENG112 Sea Journal II including daily personal journaling and a written essay summarizing your internship experience.
- Complete the required coursework for NS102 STCW Navigational Watch I and NS 102A STCW Navigational Watch II which includes all required components of the Sea Project Binder:
- Vessel Familiarization forms
- Individual STCW Assessment/Tasks with sign-offs
- Vessel-specific questions and problems
- Daily Logbook entries
- Sea-time documentation
